Janelle A. Weber, founder of the Law Office of Janelle A. Weber, recently spoke to Tampa middle school students about the importance of the First Amendment.

Ms. Weber volunteered her time as part of the Hillsborough County Bar Association’s celebration of Law Week. Ms. Weber and her co-presenter spoke to a civics class at Sulphur Springs Community School on March 12, 2019.

“It was so much fun interacting with the students and answering their questions about law and what it’s really like to be an attorney,” Ms. Weber said.

Law Week Cultivates a Deeper Understanding of the Legal Profession

During Law Week, area lawyers participated in activities at selected schools. The week recognized and built upon Law Day, which is a national initiative that includes an educational component for schools to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. This year’s theme was “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.”

  • Mock Trials were available to third and fourth grade level students. The trial this year was based on the popular fairy tale, Goldilocks and Three Little Bears. This activity is designed to introduce the courtroom process by relating to evidence, proving guilt or innocence and to identifying law procedures in an actual mock trial setting.
  • Courthouse Tours were hosted for fifth graders at the George Edgecomb Courthouse. Students arrived at the courthouse and were guided on a tour by an attorney who educated them about court procedures, trials and the legal system. For the second hour, students were escorted to a courtroom to learn about the teen court program and receive a brief message by a judge.
  • Classroom Speakers were also offered to middle and high schools. In classrooms across Hillsborough County, volunteers spoke to students about the importance of free speech, free press, and a free society.

Ms. Weber’s presentation at the school included a discussion of her practice as a media law, defamation, and invasion of privacy attorney.

Ms. Weber is a long-standing member of the Hillsborough County Bar Association.
